The AWB prefix 098 uniquely identifies Air India as the issuing carrier and ensures your shipment is routed through their cargo network. The 7-digit serial number following the prefix is the unique shipment identifier assigned by Air India. The final digit is a check digit calculated using mod-7: divide the 7-digit serial by 7 and use the remainder. For example, serial 1234567 ÷ 7 = remainder 5, so the complete AWB would be 098-12345675.

Air India transports live animals under the IATA Live Animals Regulations (LAR), which govern container, ventilation, and species-specific handling requirements for livestock, day-old chicks, zoo animals, household pets, and laboratory animals.
